SM fibre optic cable with improved bending performance

The relentless increase in data traffic is creating an exploding demand for transmission capacity and network infrastructure. New technologies such as 5G, Internet of Things and artificial intelligence are fuelling this trend. Optical networks must adapt to these demands by gaining momentum, offering higher capacities and lower latency. At the same time, density is increasing and optical networks are reaching their limits in terms of space.

All this means that fibre bending is increasingly likely to occur. Preventing performance losses due to bending effects therefore plays an increasingly important role in the necessary transition to flexible and reliable fibre connectivity. The Prysmian Group's Multimedia Solutions (MMS) BU is responding to the new requirements by upgrading its Draka singlemode fibre optic cables from G.652.D fibre to G.657.A1.

The new fibre optic cables are significantly less sensitive to bending without causing high losses. This is true for installation in floor, door and window trims as well as in racks where cables are severely bent due to lack of space. Draka G.657.A1 fibres offer the highest reliability and performance - especially in critical situations. They allow tight installation radii and are fully compatible with the G.652.D fibres. Customers receive the new fibre optic cables at the same price.

Compared to the G.652.D glass fibre used so far, G.657.A1 fibres have a much lower attenuation loss. For example, the attenuation loss of a bend-insensitive G.657.A1 fibre is only 0.2 dB when twisted twice around a pencil, whereas a G.652.D fibre loses up to 11 dB. The improved single-mode fibre has a standard step index profile that is not supported by additional structures in the cladding. This makes it fully compatible with all installed network applications.

Prysmian Group has been at the forefront of fibre optic technology and development for over 30 years. The leading cable manufacturer manufactures all cabling products in its European production facilities. The MMS BU develops optimised cable systems based on BendBright fibre technology. Customers benefit from scalable, physically compact and investment-proof solutions with which they are well equipped for future requirements.
